The key to successful user research is to observe and not intrude — you are here to watch the user and see how they use a product.


Don’t ask the user what they want.


Put the user at ease.


Don’t hypothetically ask a user what they would do, ask them what they have done.


Observe what people do.


Don’t jump to help a user straight away.


Parrot back what the user says.
